Diaper Wipe Recipes

Looking for a recipe to use with your cloth diaper wipes? Here we have accumulated what some local moms are using.

I fold them in half and fill my bathroom sink about halfway full of water. I squirt in a generous squirt of Dr. Bronner's Lavender Soap (available at Whole Foods; warning -- if you use regular baby wash instead of Dr. B's, they will stink after a day or two), about 5 drops of lavender oil, about 5 drops of tea tree oil, and a capful or two of Burt's Bees apricot baby oil. They smell absoultely wonderful (I also use them for wiping hands and faces -- mine and hers), and Morgan has had only one diaper rash in 2 years (she has had minor irritations lasting a diaper change or so, but only one true rash). I like Burt's Bees cream for minor irritation, and I used plain yogurt with active cultures on the rash she had.

I tend to just use warm water. Sometimes I put a little lavender oil and geranium oil in if he's got a rash.

I make up a solution that starts with distilled water (so the wipes don't get moldy). I add some baby oil, baby shampoo, lavender essential oil, tea tree essential oil, aloe vera juice, and vitamin E oil if I have it.

I keep the wipes in flip-top plastic boxes (easy to close). Also, when I wash the wipes, I don't bother to dry them since they are going to be doused with solution shortly, so that saves some energy, too.

1 gallon distilled water
16 tablespoons baby oil
8 tablespoons baby bath or baby shampoo (I've been using private label brands for this purpose)
16 drops tea tree essential oil
16 drops lavender essential oil
4 teaspoons vitamin E oil
8 tablespoons aloe vera gel or juice

I usually mix up 2 half-gallons at once because you can't fit all these ingredients plus the water itself into a gallon jug (I found that out the hard way--duh). Pour half a gallon of water into an empty jug, then add the ingredients (half of the above numbers since the my recipe is for a full gallon) into each half gallon of water. Then shake to mix.

I also keep a spray bottle of this mixture on the changing table in case a wipe isn't quite wet enough, or if I want to wipe baby's body or face, I can spray some solution onto a cotton ball.
